The Problem of Evil - Philosophy of Religion (PPTX)

(0)
This 35-slide PowerPoint presentation was originally used in a university classroom. It has been expanded to take the guesswork out of teaching the logical problem of evil. This presentation highlights the logical nature of the problem, which religions face this issue based upon their conception of God, and why the following three propositions are considered incompatible: (1) God is omnipotent (all-powerful), (2) God is wholly good, and (3) Evil exists. This presentation explains “theodicy” and briefly discusses a few examples toward the end (Free Will Defense, Soul-Making Argument, Pain is a Megaphone). The following thinkers are mentioned: J.L. Mackie, Peter Inwagen, Gottfried Leibniz, C.S. Lewis, and John Hick.

A Biblical Worldview (Evangelical Christianity) PPTX

(0)
This 28-slide PPTX is carefully designed to introduce both lay persons (ecclesial settings) and students to a biblical worldview. It was first delivered in an adult Sunday School class in a local church but was also designed with the teacher and student in mind (secondary and postsecondary). The following questions are addressed throughout: What is a biblical worldview? What have influential Christian thinkers said about a biblical worldview (Robert Nash, Nancy Pearcey, C.S. Lewis, John Frame, etc.)? What is presuppositional thinking and how is it related to worldview thinking? How does one cultivate a biblical worldview? What are some helpful books on the topic? Note: This is written from an evangelical viewpoint, meaning that the Bible is assumed to be inspired by God in its original manuscripts (doctrine of inspiration) and therefore inerrant.

My Confessions by Leo Tolstoy - Part 1 (PowerPoint w/ Link for Reading)

(0)
This 25-slide presentation was created and used in a University classroom. Leo Tolstoy, most famous for his realistic fiction (e.g., Anna Karenina and War and Peace), wrote an autobiography of sorts reflecting upon a horrible existential crisis that he encountered around the age of 50. He wants to find meaning, and neither his family nor his “art” (writing) seem to have any purpose. This is truly a dark time, and when he looks for answers in the “field of experimental science” and “speculative philosophy,” he comes up short. This presentation was created in conjunction with the following link which can be downloaded as a PDF (click here to be redirected). This presentation (Part 1) goes with pages 1-12 of the reading, and covers the first half of his experience: his darkest hour and his attempt to try and resist the temptation to commit suicide. In Part 2 (also available for purchase in the store), Tolstoy’s solution will be discussed.

In this lecture/presentation, his solution (his way out of the existential crisis) is discussed. This presentation was created in conjunction with the following reading which can be downloaded as a PDF (click here to be redirected). This presentation–Part 2–focuses on Tolstoy’s solution in great detail (faith, or “irrational knowledge”). It corresponds to pages 12-24 in the PDF that is linked. Part 1 is also available in the store, and needs to be taught prior to this presentation so that students have context. Part 1 was created to correspond to pages 1-12 of the linked PDF.

Introduction to Christian Ethics - Part I (PowerPoint)

(0)
This 41-slide PowerPoint presentation is carefully crafted to be aesthetically pleasing, engaging, informative, but not “cluttered.” This presentation is based on the first chapter in Wayne Grudem’s Christian Ethics. It is the first in a series of four PowerPoints (others are forthcoming and will be completed by the end of February 2021). A very detailed preview has been uploaded. While much of the text has been removed, each’s slide’s title has been left so that you can get a good idea of what is addressed in this PowerPoint. Other material has also been included to supplement some of Grudem’s main points. The PowerPoint works through the chapter in order, and while very organized, is created to have more of an organic flow so that each slide naturally follows the preceding slide. Wayne Grudem is a conservative evangelical (and Reformed to be more specific) Christian and scholar. He believes that the Bible is inerrant, and believes that Christian Ethics ought to be conducted with this in mind. However, as he points out and as this presentation elucidates, there are other approaches to ethics in Christianity.

The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe (PPTX) - Intro & Theological Symbolism

(0)
This 46-slide PowerPoint has been crafted with care to introduce students to C.S. Lewis’ masterpiece, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. It is designed to cover the following: About the Book Main Characters Major Events Theological Symbolism & Reflections (major focus of this presentation) This Powerpoint goes into great detail to help students make connections between what occurs in this book and the Christian faith. Theological topics such as the relation between the Law (the Deep Magic) and the Gospel, substitutionary atonement (Aslan’s death and the Deeper Magic), Satan (White Witch, who was Queen Jadis in The Magician’s Nephew), Christ (Aslan), The Emperor of the Sea (God the Father in the Triune Godhead), the temple veil that was torn upon Christ’s death and what this meant (the splitting of the stone table), and several other topics are addressed in detail in relation to this charming and rich narrative. The point is to help students make connections that Lewis probably had in mind. Bible verses are also used where necessary to make a connection. The overall aesthetic is professional, engaging, consists of just the right amount of text (neither too much nor too little), and contains a logical flow of ideas that I consider optimal for teaching. A worksheet has also been created that corresponds with this PowerPoint.

C.S. Lewis - Mere Christianity PPTX (Book 1, Chapter 5)

(0)
This 22-slide PowerPoint presentation is designed to teach, engage, and please the eye. It has been developed carefully to accompany the following chapter in C.S. Lewis’ book, Mere Christianity: “We Have Cause to be Uneasy.” The presentation has been designed with the teacher in mind. The flow of ideas is logical, and will help teachers walk through the chapter in an easy, efficient, and engaging manner. Also, significant effort was spent to give the student a bird’s-eye view of what Lewis is attempting to accomplish so that the student understands what Lewis is doing rather than only appreciating some of his individual statements.
